Similar to human supplements (natural health products, NHPs), animal supplements in Canada require approval by a regulatory authority prior to sale and, depending on the product, a submission to either the Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) or the Interim Notification Program (INP) is required.
The classification of animal products is based on formulation (ingredients) and the risk(s) to the health of the animals. A number of well-known NHPs that have been safely used in humans are also permitted for use in dogs, cats and horses not intended for food. Understanding how your product is classified is required to determine the appropriate regulatory pathway for accessing the market.
From product development to market access and beyond, NHP Consulting Inc. will analyze your animal supplement to determine the best strategy and facilitate regulatory approval. When a product may be eligible for approval by the INP, our team will suggested changes to formulation where necessary, prepare and submit all of the required documentation, secure approval, and review, approve and translate your label for compliance with the regulations and requirements
